Bird deterrent window film

Keep the view. Lose the strikes.

More than a billion birds a year die against glass in the U.S., most of them on ordinary low-rise buildings that reflect trees and sky. Bird-safe film and markers applied to the exterior surface in a 2-inch pattern make the glass visible to birds and nearly invisible to people — and Epic can put solar control on the same lite in the same visit.

The problem is the reflection

Birds don’t see glass. They see what it mirrors.

A bird flying toward a window is flying toward the trees and sky reflected in it. The fix is not tint and not a decal in the corner — it is a pattern on the outside surface, dense enough that there is no two-inch gap to aim for, light enough that occupants stop noticing it within a day.

  • Applied to surface 1 (exterior) — the only surface birds can see in daylight
  • 2" × 2" spacing per American Bird Conservancy guidance
  • Highest-risk glass first: corners, skywalks, glass railings, lobbies facing landscape, the first four floors
  • Documented for LEED SSpc55 and bird-friendly building ordinances
  • Installed by Epic’s own certified crews — exterior work, lifts and all

What we install

Four ways to make glass bird-safe.

Feather Friendly® markers — Epic is an authorized dealer

Small, evenly spaced exterior markers in a 2" × 2" grid — the pattern recognized by the American Bird Conservancy. Over 98% of the view stays open to people inside; birds read the glass as a surface. 15-year warranty; 20-plus-year service life. The most-specified bird-safe treatment in North America and the one most ordinances reference. Epic is an authorized Feather Friendly dealer and installer.

3M™ Fasara™ patterned films

Where the architect wants the treatment to read as design — frosted dots, lines or gradients applied to the exterior surface in bird-safe spacing. Doubles as privacy or glare control on the same lite.

Full-coverage bird-safety films

Continuous printed or textured films (dot, stripe and UV-reflective patterns) for curtainwall, skywalks, glass railings and corners where two glass walls meet — the highest-risk geometry on any building.

Paired with solar control

Most bird-strike glass is also heat-gain glass: large, reflective, facing landscape. Epic installs bird-safe markers on surface 1 and 3M solar film on surface 4 in one mobilization — one scope, one crew, two problems solved.

FAQ

Bird deterrent film questions

How many birds are we actually talking about?
The American Bird Conservancy estimates more than one billion birds die each year in the United States after colliding with glass. Most are not skyscraper strikes: the majority happen in the first three or four stories of ordinary buildings — offices, schools, campuses — where glass reflects trees and sky.
Why does the film go on the outside of the glass?
Because the problem is the reflection. Birds fly toward the trees and sky mirrored on the exterior surface. A pattern on the room side sits behind that reflection and is invisible to the bird in daylight. Every credible bird-safe product is applied to surface 1, the exterior face — which is also why installation quality and material durability matter: it lives in the weather.
What is the “2 × 2 rule”?
Markers must leave no gap larger than two inches in any direction. Older “2 × 4” guidance still lets small birds — hummingbirds, kinglets, warblers — try to fly through. The American Bird Conservancy, LEED and most municipal ordinances now reference 2" × 2".
Will it block the view or look like a sticker job?
No. Feather Friendly markers are roughly a quarter-inch and cover about 1–2% of the glass; from inside they disappear within a day of occupancy. Fasara patterns are a design decision you make with the architect. Epic produces a mockup on your actual glass before anything is ordered.
Does it count toward LEED or a code requirement?
Bird-collision deterrence is a LEED pilot credit (SSpc55), and a growing list of jurisdictions — New York City’s Local Law 15 of 2020 being the most cited — now require bird-friendly materials on new construction and major alterations. Epic documents threat-factor ratings, coverage and surface placement for your submittal.
Has Epic installed bird-deterrent film before?
This is a growing line for Epic. We are an authorized Feather Friendly® dealer and installer and are quoting bird-safe glass now for commercial and institutional projects. The installation itself — exterior surface preparation, pattern layout, edge sealing, working from lifts on curtainwall — is the same discipline our crews bring to every exterior film project, and we hold ourselves to the same written standard. Ask us for the mockup and the spec; we’ll earn the project on the glass.
