Buying

How much does window film cost?
It depends on square footage, film, glass type and access, so published per-window prices would mislead you. Residential projects are priced by window after a free in-home assessment; commercial and school security projects are priced per opening after a survey. Every assessment is free and ends with a written estimate that does not expire at midnight.
Do you charge for the assessment?
No. Measurements, film recommendation, samples on your glass, and a written estimate are free, with no obligation.
Can public entities buy without an RFP?
Yes, through Epic’s cooperative purchasing contracts: TIPS, BuyBoard, Choice Partners, PCA, Equalis, TexBuy and seven Texas ESC regional co-ops — 13 cooperatives, 21 current contracts. See cooperative purchasing.
Is Epic an authorized 3M window film dealer?
Yes. Epic is a 3M Platinum Elite National Dealer — 3M’s highest dealer tier — and a 3M DI-NOC Certified Installer, with offices in McKinney, Texas and Aurora, Colorado and crews that travel nationwide. Every film Epic installs is a genuine 3M product and carries the 3M warranty.
Does security window film lower insurance premiums?
Some carriers offer credits for documented forced-entry or windstorm mitigation; it varies by carrier, policy and region. Epic provides the film data sheets, test reports and an installation certificate you can submit to your agent — ask your carrier before the project if a credit matters to the decision.
Do you work outside Texas and Colorado?
Yes. Epic is a national 3M Platinum Elite dealer — the largest 3M window film dealer in the nation — with certified in-house crews that travel for school, government and commercial projects nationwide.

Security film

Is security window film bulletproof?
No. No window film is bulletproof or bullet-resistant. It keeps broken glass in the frame to delay forced entry and reduce flying-glass injury. Full explainer.
What is the Epic Method?
Epic’s patent-pending structural silicone sealant attachment process: remove the interior gasket, seat the glass on cork wedges, apply the film, tool the sealant into the open channel so it bonds to frame, glass and film with a mechanical interlock. See it in 3D.
Which film is best for schools?
The film Epic most often specifies for districts is 3M S2400 (24-mil polyurethane, highest forced-entry rating in the 3M line) attached with the Epic Method on entries and vestibules; Ultra S800 or Ultra Prestige where blast or sun control is also required.
Has the installed system been tested?
Yes — 3M S2400 with the Epic Method on commercial storefront framing was tested at Intertek (ISO/IEC 17025) to ASTM F3561 Method A. F3561 was written for complete window systems, so Epic tested to it for data rather than to claim “compliance”; the filmed glass stayed in the frame at every specimen size tested. A Colorado district’s field evaluation against competitors then led to the largest school security window film project in U.S. history. Request the summaries on the Epic Method page.

Sun control & appearance

Will film make my windows dark or mirrored?
Not with 3M Prestige or Ceramic — both are virtually clear and non-reflective. Night Vision adds a light shade for glare. Affinity is reflective by design for maximum heat rejection and daytime privacy. We bring samples so you choose on your own glass.
Does film affect Wi-Fi or cell signal?
3M Prestige and Ceramic are non-metallic and do not interfere with Wi-Fi, cellular, GPS or building systems. Metallized films can; we’ll tell you which is which.
Will film void my window warranty?
3M films are tested for insulated-glass compatibility and Epic checks glass type before recommending a film. 3M offers glass-breakage and seal-failure coverage with professionally installed film; terms depend on the window.
How long does window film last?
3M residential films carry a limited lifetime warranty when professionally installed; commercial films are typically warranted 10–15 years. Films are scratch-resistant and clean with ordinary ammonia-free glass cleaner.

Installation

Who installs the film?
Epic employees — Epic-Certified Installation Specialists. Never subcontractors.
How long does installation take?
Most homes in a day. Most school campuses in days. Commercial buildings floor by floor, often after hours. No glass replacement, no construction.
How do I take care of it?
Wait 30 days before cleaning, then soft cloth or squeegee with mild soap and water or ammonia-free cleaner. No abrasives or razor blades.
Can window film be removed or replaced later?
Yes. Film is removed with heat and a release solution, the adhesive is cleaned off and the glass is left as it was. A damaged pane is re-filmed on its own; an older film can be replaced with a newer 3M film without touching the frame or glass.
What if a filmed window breaks later?
Submit a service request. Warranty work is done by Epic crews; film maintenance agreements are available for districts and portfolios.

Window tint or window film?

Is window film the same thing as window tinting?
Yes. “Window tint,” “window tinting,” “home window tint” and “commercial window tinting” are the everyday names for architectural window film — a thin, optically clear polyester film bonded to the room side of existing glass. Epic installs 3M architectural films on homes, offices, schools and government buildings; we do not tint cars. The modern films are not dark: 3M Prestige and Ceramic reject most of the heat while staying virtually clear.
Does window tint have to be dark to work?
No. Dark dyed films were the 1990s answer. 3M Prestige is a non-metallic, multi-layer optical film that rejects up to 97% of infrared heat at light shades; 3M Ceramic uses nano-ceramic technology. You keep the view and the daylight and lose the heat, the glare and 99.9% of UV. Darker and reflective shades are still available where a uniform exterior look or maximum heat rejection is the goal.
What is “one-way mirror” film and does it work at night?
Reflective (dual-reflective or silver) films make glass read as a mirror from the brighter side. In daytime that is the outside, so people cannot see in. After dark the room is the brighter side and the effect reverses — anyone outside can see in and you see your own reflection. No film gives one-way privacy around the clock; for 24-hour privacy, use a 3M Fasara frost on the glass or pair film with a shade.
What is the difference between frosted glass and frosted film?
Frosted (acid-etched or sandblasted) glass is a new pane. 3M Fasara frosted film gives existing glass the same look for a fraction of the cost, in a day, and can be removed or changed later. It diffuses light, so the room stays bright but nothing behind the glass is legible. Patterns, gradients, stripes, logos and room names can be cut into it.
Do you tint cars or just buildings?
Buildings only — homes, offices, schools, hospitals, hotels, retail and government facilities. Epic is a 3M architectural film dealer; for automotive tint, look for a 3M Auto Film dealer.

Heat, glare, fading & energy

How much heat does window film actually block?
It depends on the film. 3M Prestige rejects up to 97% of infrared heat and up to 60% of total solar energy while passing most visible light; 3M Affinity rejects up to 79% of total solar energy with a reflective exterior; Ceramic and Night Vision sit between. Every figure Epic quotes is 3M published data for the specific shade on 1/4 in. clear glass, and the spec card for each film is in the download library.
Will window film stop my floors and furniture from fading?
It removes the biggest cause. Fading is driven mostly by ultraviolet light (about 40%), with visible light and heat as the rest. Every 3M architectural film blocks 99%+ of UV, and the heat-rejecting films cut the solar heat as well, so fading slows dramatically — on hardwood, rugs, art, upholstery and retail inventory. Nothing stops fading completely; UV film is the closest thing.
Can window film fix glare on my TV and computer screens?
Yes. 3M Night Vision cuts glare up to 83–90% and, unlike darker tints, stays clear from the inside at night so you are not looking at your own reflection. For glare on a specific elevation, we recommend by window rather than filming the whole house.
Will window film lower my energy bill? What is the payback?
On sun-exposed glass, yes. Film reduces solar heat gain, so air conditioning runs less; buildings typically see payback in two to six years, faster on west-facing single-pane glass. For a commercial building Epic runs a facility energy analysis that ranks every 3M film by savings and payback for your glass, orientation, HVAC and utility rate. Many utilities offer rebates, and 3M is an ENERGY STAR partner.
Does window film help in winter?
3M All Season (low-emissivity) films reflect room heat back inside in winter while rejecting solar heat in summer — the right choice where heating costs matter as much as cooling. Standard sun-control films are neutral to slightly helpful in winter.
Can window film cause my glass to crack?
Thermal stress is real on the wrong glass, which is why film selection matters. 3M publishes film-to-glass compatibility guidance, Epic checks glass type and construction before recommending a film, and 3M backs approved applications with a glass-breakage and seal-failure warranty. Choosing a film from a chart without a survey is how glass gets cracked.

Blinds, shades, curtains & privacy

Should I buy blinds or roller shades instead of window film?
For heat, fading and glare, film does the job better and does it all day. Interior blinds, roller shades, cellular shades, shutters and curtains hide the window but the sun has already come through the glass — the shade absorbs the heat inside the room and only protects what it covers while it is closed. Film rejects the heat at the glass and blocks UV across the whole pane with the view kept. Shades still win for blackout and for one hour of low sun straight into a screen; our film vs. blinds comparison walks through it.
Does Epic sell roller shades or blinds?
Epic is a film and finishes company, not a shade company. When a film project calls for shades as well — a media room, a bedroom that needs blackout — we can arrange them as part of the job so you are not sourcing a second vendor, but we will never sell you a shade to solve a heat or fading problem that film solves better.
How do I get privacy without losing daylight?
3M Fasara frosted and gradient films. The glass stays bright, nothing behind it is legible, and the effect is permanent — no closing anything. Full frost, a privacy band at seat height, a gradient that fades from frost to clear, or patterns and logos: the visualizer shows each one on real glass.
Which rooms and glass are privacy film used on?
Conference rooms and glass offices, exam and interview rooms, bathrooms, sidelites next to front doors, street-facing windows, stairwells and lobbies — anywhere people can see in and should not, or should see less.

Security: break-ins, blast, storms & safety glazing

What is intruder-resistant (forced-entry) window film?
Thick safety and security film — 3M S2400 at 24 mil or Ultra S800 — bonded to the room side of existing glass and anchored to the frame with a structural silicone attachment. When the glass is struck or shot it stays in the frame as a sheet instead of falling out, so there is no opening to reach through or climb through on the first strikes. That delay is what lets a lockdown or a police response work. Texas calls it “forced-entry-resistant” glazing; buyers also search for intruder film, security tint, anti-intrusion film and active-shooter film — all the same product category.
Does security film stop smash-and-grab burglaries?
It changes the math. A smash-and-grab depends on glass that opens in seconds; attached security film holds the pane together through repeated strikes, so the opening is loud, slow and visible — and most attackers move on. It is the standard retrofit for storefronts, pharmacies, jewelers, dispensaries, schools and churches, and some insurers credit it.
What is blast-mitigation window film?
Flying glass is the leading cause of injury in an explosion. Security film with a structural attachment holds fragments to the film so the glass fails as a sheet rather than a spray. Performance is rated under ASTM F1642 and the GSA TS01 protocol by how far fragments travel into the room; Epic specifies film and bead size — typically 3M Ultra S800 or S2400 with a 1/2 in. attachment — to the hazard level your security assessment calls for. Epic’s founder created the first security film attachment system for bomb-blast mitigation at a prior company.
Does window film help in hurricanes, tornadoes, hail and windstorms?
Windstorm-rated safety film with a structural attachment keeps glass broken by wind-borne debris in the frame, which keeps rain and wind pressure out of the building and reduces the flying-glass hazard inside. It is not a substitute for impact-rated glazing where code requires it (coastal hurricane zones), but it is the practical retrofit for existing glass in hail and tornado country. Ask for the windstorm-rated 3M films and the 3/8 in. minimum attachment.
What is safety glazing film and when is it required?
Building codes require safety glazing — glass that breaks safely — in doors, sidelites, shower enclosures, low windows and other hazardous locations. Existing annealed glass can be brought into compliance with ANSI Z97.1 / CPSC 16 CFR 1201 rated safety film (3M S140 and up) instead of replacing the glass. It also addresses spontaneous breakage of tempered glass and earthquake and seismic glass fall-out.
Is “intruder film” the same as bulletproof film?
No. No window film is bulletproof, bullet-resistant or ballistic, and Epic will put that in writing. Security film holds broken glass together so an attacker is delayed at the opening; it does not stop projectiles. Where ballistic protection is required the answer is ballistic glazing or a transaction window. The plain version is on our page Is security film bulletproof?
Why does the attachment matter so much?
Because the glass-to-frame joint is where forced entry succeeds. Film alone keeps glass together; attached film keeps the glass sheet in the opening. The industry shortcut leaves the gasket in place and runs a bead over it, which bonds to one of three surfaces. The Epic Method removes the interior gasket, seats the glass on cork wedges and tools the sealant into the open channel so it bonds frame, glass and film with a mechanical interlock. The Buyer Beware photos show what the shortcut looks like a year later.

Decorative film, DI-NOC & graphics

What is 3M DI-NOC and is it really like wallpaper?
Think of it as architectural wallpaper that looks and feels like wood, stone, metal, leather or fabric — a self-adhesive finish film applied over existing walls, doors, columns, casework and elevator cabs. It refinishes a lobby or an elevator in days, over what is there, with no demolition and a Class A fire rating. More than 1,000 finishes; Epic is a 3M-certified DI-NOC installer, which is what keeps the 3M warranty valid.
What is decorative window film?
The 3M Fasara line: frosts, gradients, linear patterns, textures and dichroic color-shift films that give plain glass the look of etched, sandblasted or patterned glass. Used for privacy, branding and design on conference rooms, lobbies, storefronts, healthcare and residential glass.
Can you print our logo or a mural on glass or walls?
Yes. Epic designs, prints and installs environmental graphics — wall murals, window and floor graphics, wayfinding, frosted vinyl with cut logos, full branded environments — on 3M media, printed at VisuFlare, our sister large-format studio in McKinney. Perforated window film turns a storefront or a school entry into a printed surface people inside can still see out of.
How long do DI-NOC and graphics last, and can they be removed?
DI-NOC carries a 12-year interior warranty from 3M and is cleaned like a painted wall. Printed graphics on 3M media typically last five to seven years indoors, less in direct exterior sun. Both are removable: 3M changeable adhesives come off clean, so a campaign graphic or a rebrand does not mean repainting.

Cost, process & care

What does window film cost per square foot?
We quote per window, not per square foot, because the same square footage can cost very differently depending on film, glass type, height, access and how many small lites there are. Published per-square-foot numbers mislead in both directions. The assessment is free and the written price is fixed; public entities buy at awarded co-op contract pricing.
How long does the installation take?
A typical home is finished in a day. A school vestibule with the Epic Method attachment is one after-hours shift; a campus is scheduled wing by wing over days. Commercial buildings go floor by floor, usually after hours or on weekends, with no glass replacement and no construction debris.
What happens on the day of installation?
Crews are Epic employees in Epic vehicles. We protect the floor, clean the glass, apply the film with a water-based mounting solution, squeegee it, trim it to the frame and — on security work — install the structural attachment. Windows may look slightly hazy or show small water pockets for up to 30 days while the film cures; that is normal and clears on its own.
Why does new window film look cloudy or have bubbles?
Water left between the film and the glass during installation evaporates through the film over 2–30 days depending on film thickness and weather; security film takes the longest. Hazing, small water pockets and a slightly milky look during that period are normal. Air bubbles, dirt specks or peeling edges are not — call us and we fix them.
How do I clean window film?
After the 30-day cure: soft cloth or rubber squeegee, mild soap and water or any ammonia-free glass cleaner. No abrasive pads, no razor blades, no ammonia. That is the whole maintenance program.
Can window film be removed, and does it damage the glass?
Yes, and no. Film is removed with heat and a release solution, the adhesive is cleaned off and the glass is left as it was. Replacing a damaged pane of film takes about as long as installing it the first time.

Warranty, insurance & incentives

What warranty comes with window film?
3M residential architectural films carry a limited lifetime warranty when installed by an authorized dealer; commercial films are typically warranted 10–15 years depending on the product, and DI-NOC 12 years interior. The warranty covers bubbling, peeling, cracking, delamination and discoloration, and 3M adds glass-breakage and seal-failure coverage on approved applications. Epic registers every job with 3M and handles the claim if one is ever needed.
Will window film lower my insurance?
Sometimes. Some carriers credit documented forced-entry or windstorm mitigation on commercial and institutional policies; residential credits are rarer. Ask your agent and we will supply the film and attachment documentation.
Are there rebates, tax credits or grants for window film?
Utility rebates for energy film are common for commercial customers and some residential programs; check your utility. School security film is funded through state school-safety grants (Texas SSSFG and TEA programs, Colorado BEST and School Security Disbursement), federal COPS SVPP grants and bond programs; Epic supplies the compliance documentation. Energy-efficiency tax incentives for commercial buildings change year to year — ask your tax advisor and we will provide the product data.
